Mental health refers to cognitive, behavioural, and emotional well-being. It is all about how people think, feel, and behave. People sometimes use the term “mental health” to mean the absence of a mental disorder. Mental health can affect daily living, relationships, and physical health. However, this link also works in the other direction. Factors in people’s lives, interpersonal connections, and physical factors can contribute to mental ill health. Looking after mental health can preserve a person’s ability to enjoy life. Doing this involves balancing life activities, responsibilities, and efforts to achieve psychological resilience. Stress, depression, and anxiety can all affect mental health and disrupt a person’s routine. Although health professionals often use the term mental health, doctors recognize that many psychological disorders have physical roots.

Aims & Scope

MMHJ Advances in understanding of, and treatments for, mental illness frequently do not benefit those who most need them because of poorly developed mental health systems. Globally there is increasing attention to mental health legislation and policy, mental health system financing and governance, mental health service design implementation and evaluation, human resource development, effective translation of research to inform mental health policies and programs. MMHJ is committed to promotion and protection of the human rights of people with mental illness.

Contributions are encouraged from all fields of mental health, especially those that address new developments and pursue innovative approaches. MMHJ publishes Research in Brief articles (short papers reporting on preliminary study results, research in the early stages of development or updates on previously reported results), Empirical Articles, Systematic Reviews, Meta-analyses and Special Sections and Issues with a particular thematic focus. Relevance for an international readership is our prominent goal.
